‘Ethical Veganism – The Inside Story’ (Background to the legal case)
About me
I am a published author on vegan rights, initiated the campaign for vegan rights in 2012, and have promoted the legal rights of vegans for over a decade.
I have a PhD in Law and a special interest in veganism and human rights. I have a Master of Laws with Distinction and undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications in law and social sciences. I am a former Citizens Advice Advisor, former Head of Legal Clinic and a qualified Mediator.
I am Consultant to The Vegan Society and founded and chair the Society’s International Rights Network, formerly The International Vegan Rights Alliance, established in 2012.
I host annual conferences on veganism and law and vegan rights issues. I manage The Vegan Society’s rights and advocacy service and recently introduced The Vegan Society’s education function to promote a rights-based approach to vegan-inclusive education for all pupils.
I have given evidence in Tribunal proceedings and overseen successful grievances raised by vegans. I have achieved out-of-court settlements in discrimination claims, been granted leave to intervene in cases involving vegans at the European Court of Human Rights and submitted materials and evidence to assist the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario in understanding ethical veganism in a case that will determine whether ethical vegans can be protected as a 'creed' under the Ontario Human Rights Code.
I typically process over 300 requests for information and support from vegans annually.
My academic and advocacy work in the area of veganism and law has been a catalyst for legal protection for vegans in different jurisdictions around the world.
I have a postgraduate qualification in teaching and learning in higher education. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, have supervised independent undergraduate and postgraduate research projects in veganism and law, given lectures on veganism and law around the world and collaborated with numerous organisations.
